Akismet marking real contact form messages as spam
Akismet doesn't block a contact form message on its own. Your form plugin sends the message to Akismet, gets back "spam" or "not spam", and the form plugin decides what happens next. So the fix is in the form plugin. Find the flagged message in the form plugin's spam list and mark it not spam. Akismet's own help pages say it has no tool to un-spam a contact form entry. If you use Contact Form 7, you need the Flamingo plugin to see flagged messages at all, because CF7 doesn't store submissions.

The Contact Form 7 and WPForms rows come from reading their code (CF7 6.1.7, WPForms Lite 2.0.2.1). The rest are from Akismet's page on using Akismet with contact forms.
What to do
Make sure it's actually Akismet
On Contact Form 7, if none of your fields has an
akismet:option, Akismet isn't checking that form and something else is blocking it. See what blocks CF7 messages. With Flamingo installed, each spam message shows which check flagged it.Get the message back
Open the form plugin's spam list (Flamingo → Inbound Messages → Spam for CF7, Feedback for Jetpack) and mark the real message as not spam. Then reply to the customer.
Keep a copy from now on
If you're on Contact Form 7 without Flamingo, install it today. Otherwise the next flagged enquiry is simply gone.
Turn Akismet off for the one form that suffers
Akismet says you can't turn it on for comments but off for forms. It checks both. You can take it off a single form, though: remove the
akismet:options from that CF7 form, or untick Enable Akismet anti-spam protection in that WPForms form's settings. Run it that way for a couple of weeks and compare.Check the key isn't the issue the other way round
In our test, Akismet 5.7.2 without an API key did nothing on Contact Form 7 or WPForms. Spam went straight through. Contact Form 7's code only calls Akismet when there's a key. So if you think Akismet is on and spam is getting through, check the key.
Why it's hard to see this happening
Akismet answers spam or not spam. When it says spam, Contact Form 7 records only "Akismet returns a spam response." There's no reason given, so you can't tell which part of the message it disliked.

Marking messages "not spam" does get used. In the October 2025 thread above, Akismet's support said they took the two submissions the owner had marked not spam, investigated why they'd been flagged, and adjusted how Akismet treated that site. So mark every false positive, even after you've replied to the customer.

- Do it in your form plugin, not in Akismet. Akismet's documentation says it has no tool for contact form entries. For Contact Form 7 that means Flamingo's spam list; for Jetpack it's the Feedback screen.
- Where do Contact Form 7 messages go when Akismet marks them as spam?
- Nowhere, unless the Flamingo plugin is installed. Contact Form 7 doesn't store submissions. With Flamingo, spam messages are kept in its spam list along with the note "Akismet returns a spam response."
- Can I use Akismet for comments but not for contact forms?
- Not from Akismet's side. Akismet says it checks both once activated. You can remove it from individual forms in the form plugin, for example by taking the akismet: options off a Contact Form 7 form.
- Does Akismet work without an API key?
- No. In our test, Akismet 5.7.2 without a key made no difference to Contact Form 7 or WPForms, and spam went through.
